OF those who have never undertaken a work like this, few can realize what a vast amount of research and patient labor is re quired properly to trace out a Family Tree or Genealogy. It is not the work of a few months only, but often occupies several years. It is only within a few years that public records of births, marriages and deaths have been properly kept, even in New. England, and still in many parts of this country the keeping of such records is very imperfect, especially in the South and West. It is a matter of regret that this important branch of history has been so much neglected, as a great deal of valuable material is thereby forever lost. Those of our family who live in the South will understand this to be the reason why their records are so meagre, for I have availed myself of every opportunity at my command to obtain all the information possible, and the result is contained in the following pages.

A village bearing the name of Thwing lies forty miles east of the city of York, about which Rev. Edward Payson Thwing, in his Out-door Life in Europe, writes as follows One little hamlet, ten miles distant, was my Mecca this time, the town of Thwing. It was sought with the zeal of an antiquary simply.
