Description

Cyril Wild, a former pupil at Charterhouse and an Oxford graduate, lived and worked in Japan during the 1930s where he mastered the Japanese language and gained insights into their culture.

During World War II, as a staff officer in the 3rd Indian Corps Malaysia, he played a historic role as interpreter during both the British surrender to the Japanese in 1942 and the Japanese surrender to the British in 1945.

In the intervening years he was a prisoner of war at Changi Gaol in Singapore and at Sonkurai labour camp during the construction of the Burma-Siam railway, where conditions were barbaric and his tireless advocacy for fellow POWs earnt him the nickname “The Tall Man Who Never Slept” from the Japanese.

It was here that Wild's understanding of Japanese language and mentality saved the life of Jim Bradley, this book’s author, when Wild convinced a supervising officer to spare him from execution following a failed escape attempt. Such leniency was extremely rare in those brutal times.

After the war, Wild served as a War Crimes Liaison Officer, but tragically died, aged 38, in an aircraft accident in 1946 before he could complete his work of bringing Japanese war criminals to justice, sparking rumours of sabotage.

His bravery, kindness, and positive impact on the lives of many others are celebrated in Jim Bradley's affectionate biography of his former friend and saviour.
