In the subtitle to his book, Campbell defines the mean ing of his title: Vitruvius Britannicus or the British Architect, containing the plans of the Regular Buildings and the Geometrical Plans of Gardens and Plantations. The definition of the term Vitruvius which this title and the book itself constitute has two important phases.
