Description
The Second World War would see Old Boys of the Duke of York’s Royal Military School serve once again in great numbers, adding 49 names to the war memorial tablets that proudly adorn the walls of the school chapel in Guston, Kent and gaining many honours.
In Volume One, we detailed the 409 Dukies, as those who have attended the school have always been known, who gave their lives in the First World War, a total that includes the 181 “Lost Boys” who were never commemorated at the school. It was never expected that there would be a similar number of “Lost Boys” for the Second World War, but the first detailed research of the school records has shown that at least a further 99 were missed and 3 were incorrectly commemorated.
This book concludes a project to identify the war dead of the school in the two World Wars and tells the story of the 145 Dukies who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Second World War, only 20 years after many other Dukies had done so in the conflict expected to end all wars. The inter-war period saw the ethos of the school start to move away from providing large numbers of boy soldiers to the ranks and bands of the British Army; yet despite more and more having opted for careers in civilian life, this generation of Dukies upheld the school motto, served throughout the world and proved themselves to be true “Sons of the Brave”.
