Description
Many Christians are reticent to involve themselves with others in the church who may suffer from mental disorders, and this might be for a variety of reasons. One of these reasons is fear – fear of doing something wrong, fear of the illness itself, and sometimes, fear of potential violence.
This book emphasises the family nature of the church and how this biblical model can be applied to church practice in relation to those who suffer from psychiatric disorders. In this setting, responsibility should not rest solely with the pastor or other official officeholders in the church, but rather with the congregation as a whole, with the book putting emphasis on the principle of collective responsibility.
As well as providing useful information on a range of psychiatric disorders, there are helpful practical guidelines for the involvement of the whole church in this topical and vital area which, arguably, has not received all appropriate attention in the past.
Many of the themes presented here have a broader application in the church than to the mentally disordered alone, and have implications for pastoral care in more general terms. Although written by a psychiatrist, the material is presented without using overly technical language, and is easy to read and follow.
