Description
Ron Swain, like many National Servicmen, held onto the memories of his time as a conscript in the UK Armed Forces. His two-year National Service as an ‘erk’ in the Royal Air Force from 1952 to 1954 was especially notable. Drawing from a diary he maintained during that period, Ron’s account of his National Service experience is rich in intricate details often absent in recollections based solely on memory. Here is a glimpse into his journey:
Beginning with the familiar Basic Training phase, a rite of passage for all National Servicemen, Ron underwent rigorous training at RAF Wilmslow. The ‘bull’, the ‘square-bashing’ and the formidable Corporal Drill Instructors are vividly portrayed with honesty and humour.
Following this initial phase, Ron delved into specialized training as an Airframe Mechanic or ‘rigger’ at RAF St Athan before being assigned to 148 Squadron of RAF Bomber Command, stationed at RAF Upwood. Here, he took on the responsibility of maintaining RE347, one of the squadron’s aging Avro Lincoln bomber aircraft.
This era marked a pivotal moment in aviation history as piston-engine aircraft were being phased out in favour of jet-powered flight. Ron had the opportunity to work with iconic jet aircraft like the English Electric Canberra, and Vickers Valiant, providing detailed insights that appeal to vintage aircraft enthusiasts.
Apart from his daily duties, Ron underwent special training for the Valiant and was later deployed to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. His account of his involvement in the 1953 London-Christchurch Air Race, where an RAF Canberra emerged victorious, captures the thrill of being part of this historic aviation event.
Returning to the UK, Ron was immersed in the preparations for the RAF Review of 1953 following the Coronation of HM Queen Elizabeth II. The participation of Lincolns from 148 Squadron in this historic flypast remains a significant highlight.
Ron’s meticulous and vivid descriptions of the above events offer a captivating insight into the RAF during this pivotal postwar era.
This captivating memoir, filled with genuine period-specific details and narrated with charm and wit, comes highly recommended for National Service and RAF veterans, aviation enthusiasts, historians, and anyone intrigued by the postwar period.
