Description
In this engaging memoir, Group Captain Sid Adcock reflects on an extraordinary 50-year career with the Royal Air Force and RAFVR.
Beginning as a Cranwell Cadet after school, he graduated as a Pilot Officer in July 1962. Serving as a co-pilot on Hastings aircraft in RAF Nicosia, Cyprus, he spent 2½ years with No.70 Squadron in a tactical air transport role across the Mediterranean and Middle East.
Upon his return to the UK in 1966, he transitioned to become a Flying Instructor. After a stint at a Basic Flying Training School, he re-joined the Air Transport Force in 1970, converting to the Vickers VC10, then the RAF’s newest aircraft.
During his time flying the VC10 globally, he served as co-pilot, Captain, Flight Commander, and finally as the Commander of No. 241 Operational Conversion Unit at RAF Brize Norton. Based on his vast operational experience, he was assigned as an Exchange Officer to the USAF Military Airlift Command headquarters for almost three years.
Back in Europe, he held staff roles at the Ministry of Defence in London and NATO Military Headquarters in Belgium. Eventually achieving the rank of Group Captain, he was Station Commander at RAF Newton in Nottinghamshire.
Upon retiring from the regular RAF in 1996, Sid joined the RAF Volunteer Reserve, flying Air Cadets with No.2 Air Experience Flight at Boscombe Down. He remained with the RAFVR until 2010, retiring at 69 after accumulating over 8,500 flying hours in his 50-year RAF career.
Sid's extensive and diverse career has provided him with a wealth of stories, shared with eloquence, humour, and attention to detail. These tales will inform and entertain fellow RAF veterans, aviation enthusiasts, and military historians exploring the postwar era.
