From the close of the revolutionary war to September, 1789, there was practical] no United States Arm A regiment of infantry and a battalion of artillery - in al about 700 officers an men - were retained at the close of the war to guard ublic stores and pro rttjv and to occupg posts vacated by the British on the nort west boundaries of t e nited States. Y act of Congress of June 3, 1784, it was resolved, As it appears absolutely necessa? To have 700 noncommissioned officers and men, properly officered, it is recommen ed to the following States, as most convenient to the posts shortly to be vacated by the British, to furnish from their militia: Connec tient, 185; New York, 185; New J ersev, 110; Pennsylvania, 280, to serve twelve months, unless sooner discharged.
