Description

Excerpt from God the Bible: A Review of Objections to ''Literature and Dogma''

The identification of the Balaam of the Apocalypse with Paul requires us first to assume that the Tiibingen theory is true. Now, the evidence of Paul''s own letters is against the theory. True, there was difference between him and the older Apostles respecting the obligation of the Jewish law. They were narrower and more timid than he was, and he tells us of his having once at Antioch ''with stood Peter to the face because he was to be blamed.'' But he tells us, also, of his having come to a satisfactory arrangement with the pillar-apostles, and of their having ''extended to him the right hand of fellowship.'' The hardest word he has for them is to call them apostles exceedingly. On the other hand, quite distinct from the pillar-apostles whose action it sought to force, is the real Judaising party whom Paul stigmatised as ''false brethren,'' and to whom he will not give place by subjection, no, not for an hour.''
