El epígrafe que se ha hallado sobre muchos manuscritos de estas cartas, prueba que el hom bre de bien a quien se le deben, no tuvo interes en darse a conocer por autor de ellas, y que no guió su pluma ni el deseo de reputacion, ni el amor de la gloria, ni la ambicion de distinguirse por opiniones atrevidas que los sacerdotes y los que la ignorancia ha subyugado estos llaman impz''edades, sino solamente el deseo de hacer bien á sus semejantes ilustrando y_desarra1_gan do de ellos, por decirlo así, la religion misma como origen de todos los males que los afligenhace tantos siglos. Ved aquí el epígrafe: si ten go razon, poco te importa saber quien soy. Es un verso de Cornelle, cuya aplicacion es muy a propósito y que deberia estar en el frontispicio de todos los libros de esta naturaleza.
