Description
"I once had an experience while driving behind a truck with a big logo painted on the back-large, gothic capitals-that simply refused to resolve into coherent lettering for me. There were letters there and I could recognize that the curves and uprights were text, but it refused to become coherent as lettering. Aphasic is my attempt to explore that experience, to modulate the recognition of lettering without the need to always or consistently produce letters, words, or lexical statements."
How do we injure time? At first, Betancourt's compositions in Aphasic may keep like sounds and smells that are not detected, but the negative color-shots and voided spaces of these glitchy neo-glyphs sing or don't sing like units of time. Another and another and another-the asemics read like a score to me. Halting time in the perimeters of language, building beautiful ownership of the impacts of speech and writing as only humans can. And I never asked: but where is the source image? Our pioneer in glitch, Betancourt's recognizable glitch-work and scholarship no doubt inform this non-temporal asemics: less expressionist as a recent trend in the field-more composed than decomposed. How fresh. Asemics and glitch win again.

Michael Betancourt's Aphasic is a concrete poetic for a TV generation. Like staring too-long and too-deeply into a CRT, Aphasic is a wonderful headache of cathode colour, twitchy left of eye glitch residuals and overlapping letterform blur. The ghost is in the machine, and the machine speaks poesy.
