Description
This book tells the story of former soldier Bob Robinson’s misadventures in Burma during World War II.
Hailing from England’s scenic Lake District, Bob showed an independent streak from an early age, learning to box, standing up to bullies and playing rugby against grown men twice his age. This fortitude would stand him in good stead later after he had joined up and was shipped off to the Far East to become a member of the 14th Army under General Slim.
Often referred to as the ‘Forgotten Fourteenth’, this jungle fighting force endured some of the most harrowing conditions experienced by any British forces during the war. In extreme heat and humidity, plagued by mosquitoes, snakes and leeches, they faced an implacable enemy in the Japanese, whose strict code of honour forbade them from surrendering. Fighting was brutal and often at close quarters and Bob had soon killed his first enemy soldier. It would not be his last.
But platoon sergeant Bob also faced another more insidious enemy, namely dissent from within the ranks. Some of the men in his platoon resented his authority and sought to undermine it. Their mutinous activities almost cost Bob his life and did (unjustly) lose him his sergeant’s stripes.
The story of how Bob survived this insurrection whilst coping with the perils of jungle warfare is indeed an inspiring one that will surprise, shock and inform readers in equal measure.
