Description
Spring-Heel’d Jack:
The Terror of London (1863)
WHEREAS, a little over a quarter of a century ago, a person known to the police as Spring-Heeled Jack did frighten and cause the death of several persons, the daring deeds and startling adventures of this wonderful man will be published in Weekly Numbers, with Illustrations every week of his doings.
In 1838, the name of Spring-Heeled Jack struck terror into the hearts of the inhabitants of the villages around London as he perpetrated violent attacks against women. While the terror subsided in the ensuing months, the interest of Jack as an urban legend never waned. In 1863, the first serial was published in 40 “Penny Dreadful” issues, showing Jack not as a violent assailant, but an avenger who protected the vulnerable and punished the wicked, as well as having a few “pranks” along the way.
Most of the collections of this rare serial novel are incomplete, however, the missing issues have been located and included for this volume, which also features a new introduction by J.S Mackley.
