Description
21st of March, 1941, and the country is under constant bombardment. Just as James Farrar’s fire-watching stint in London’s Manchester Square finishes, there’s a phone call from old chum, Philip Tolefree, after eighteen months silence.
Farrar informs him of a curious letter from a stranger, Philip Blenkinsop, a survivor of the S. S. Bridgend recently sunk in the Atlantic, summoning him to the Imperial at Westport to receive a message from the ship’s captain. Blenkinsop had also been on Tolefree’s radar but he’s surprised he’s still alive - as the authorities had only named those rescued as Perry and Black.
Coincidentally Tolefree was Westport bound too, and the following morning the two travel from Paddington to the seaside hotel. Strange notes and doodles on a cigarette paper are spotted after their preprandial drinks, with further alarming and strange occurrences including gunshots in the hotel before both being caught up in an air raid.
However, discovery of the notation does evidence that someone at the hotel knew the raid was going to take place - but who was it? And what was the message?
