From the eastern extension of the Via there were two narnow layers Of sandstone rubble five and seven feet wide respectively, which branched Off at right angles in a direct line northward, on either side of a water conduit or drain. The one along the west side of the latte-r was 39 feet and that on the east side 50 feet in length. Whether they were. Causeways leading to the jewellers'' workshops or foundations of rude walls or sim ply pitching to prevent the soft surface from being trampled into the ditch, it was hard to determine.
