But, in Egypt, as well as in Greece, they had a special, and a very good way, of dealing with those statesmen who betrayed the trust of the people.
In those countries, under the rule of the initiate-kings, the statesman that proved false to his trust, that betrayed his constituents, was punished with death. It is needless to say that this was seldom necessary.
Also, in like manner, the Priesthood and the Training School for Initiates dealt with the Neophyte that proved false.
It must not be understood, however, that, in the case of the Neophyte, the Priesthood either put him to death or saw that it was done. On the contrary, the Priesthood had nothing whatever to do with it. According to the Oc cult Law, the Neophyte, by his own thoughts and acts, metes out his own punishment. The Law of Punishment is this. In the Halls of Mystery, when the Neophyte fol lows certain Invocations, which lead him to Mastership, he lsets into motion certain Forces; and these Forces, ter rible and sublime for good, are the very Forces that react upon himself if he proves faithless to the Order and its teachings.
