Description
Excerpt from The Spirits in Prison and Other Studies on the Life After Death
The fact that, after a sale of four thousand copies of this work, I have been asked to prepare a fresh issue, leads me to think that it has met a want more or less widely felt. The many letters which I have received from correspondents personally unknown, but whose minds had been drawn to the contemplation of the great problems of which I have ventured to treat, confirm that impression and are a more than sufficient reward for whatever labour I have bestowed on them. I am largely indebted to those correspondents for the facts, references, and quotations which will be found in the Additional Notes.
Acting on the suggestion of some of my reviewers and of personal friends, I have, I hope, added to the usefulness of the book by the addition (1) of a fuller analytical Table of Contents, and (2) of somewhat copious Indexes. For both of these I am indebted to the kindness of the Rev. H. W. Pereira, m.a., of whose scholarly accuracy in such work - a work, perhaps, of greater labour than that of the writer sufficient evidence will be found, if any were wanted besides that thus given to the reader, in his thought ful and exhaustive volume, A Commentary on the Ofiiee for the Ministration of Holy Baptism. I know no work on that subject in English theological literature more abounding in a wealth of illustrative quotations from Scripture, Ancient Liturgies, and the writings of Catholic Fathers, Doctors, and Divines.
