Description
Excerpt from The Life of St. Agnes of Rome: Virgin and Martyr
Three centuries were gone by since the blood of Jesus Christ had ?owed upon Calvary, and the blood of Christians, meanwhile, was ?owing continually, without other cessation than that occasioned from time to time by the weariness of the executioners. Still, however, the Gospel had penetrated even to the extremities of the earth. Christianity had transformed''millions of souls; a new world was about to go forth as from a new creation; it seemed but to await a last moistening dew of the blood of martyrs in order to burst into existence. The time was ap preaching, in fine, when the ransom of the world would be complete; one, and the last install ment, so to speak, remained to be paid, and the redeemed world would belong openly to Christ.
