Description

Excerpt from A Treatise on Atonement: In Which the Finite Nature of Sin Is Argued, Its Cause and Consequences as Such; The Necessity and Nature of Atonement; And Its Glorious Consequences, in the Final Reconciliation of All Men to Holiness and Happiness

Of course the book does not fully represent the thinking of our own day, even in the denomination whose theology it has so largely shaped. It is homely in phrase, often archaic in style and crude in substance. Much of the reasoning does not appeal to the modern intellect; because the premises of this reasoning are often grounded in views of life or interpretations of facts which have long been outgrown. But that is true of all the world''s masterpieces of thought. No man can free himself from his own environment. He must hew his way to the truth with such implements as come to his hand. Precisely the same reservations must be made in regard to such classics in reasoning as Butler''s Analogy, or even, to go higher still, the Dialogues of Plato. Butler must be freely annotated in order to be adapted to modern reading: and Plato is a closed book to all who do not know enough of ancient history and sociology to apply their own gloss to what he has written. The Treatise must be read with an alert and tolerant historic sense, which allows for the times and the traditions and the common thought in which it was produced.
