Description
Excerpt from The Oldest Register Book of the Parish of Hawkshead in Lancashire: 1568-1704
N 1891 the Editor first projected the transcription of the earliest Register Book of Hawkshead; but, owing to a variety of reasons, it had to be abandoned for a time. In 1893, however, he was enabled to commence work, and a veréatz''m and lz''temtz''m transcript was proceeded with as quickly as possible, until in October, 1895, the manuscript was placed in the hands of the publishers and circulars sent out. Owing no doubt to the rural character of the district, subscribers'' names came in but slowly, so that it was not until the commencement of this year that the editor and publishers considered that they were justified in sending the work to press. From those whose names appear in the list of subscribers, the editor feels that he Should ask pardon for the delay (unavoidable though it was) in the publication of the present volume.
