Description
Excerpt from The Dawn of British Trade: To the East Indies, as Recorded in the Court Minutes of the East India Company, 1599-1603, Containing an Account of the Formation of the Company, the First Adventure and Waymouth''s Voyage in Search of the North-West Passage
Mr. Stevens''s intention ''was to have written a lengthy essay by way of introduction, but he was unfortunately prevented by failing health and the pressure of other work. I may add, however, that from his memoranda it appears he was probably more interested in the volume from an American than from an Indian point of view. Perhaps this is pardonable when it is remembered how close were his sympathies and studies with the history and geography of the land of his birth; never theless, the importance of the British and Indian aspeét of the volume must by no means be lost sight of. Finding that his memoranda were not sufficiently detailed to be capable of ex tension, Sir George Birdwood has kindly assented to my re quest to write an introduction.
