The duties Of a Policeman are arduous in the extreme. His work is more carefully scrutinized than that of any Officer in any other branch Of the city departments. If a mistake is made by any member Of the Police force, it is Open to criticism, and oftentimes the entire force is unjustly stigmatized on account Of the acts of an individual member.
The Detective branch Of the service is one of great im portance; and much depends upon the officer''s sagacity and diligence in order to be successful in working up criminal cases. He should have a knowledge of the criminal classes, be skillful in Obtaining facts, and expeditious in following them up; have quick perception, and be endowed with a good share Of common sense, which is really one Of the most important qualifications for the position.
