Hailsham, already mentioned when dealing with Eastbourne, comes next in order, George Breads establishing his press there in the early part Of the nineteenth century. The earliest date I have is 1828 when Breads printed Hake''s Something new on men and manners. At Easebourne, near Midhurst, a boy of fifteen, Howard Dudley, had a small press, from which he issued in 1835 his Juvenile researches, or, a description of some of the principal towns in the west of Sussex and the borders Of Hants, the whole being interspersed with pieces by a Sister. Easebourne printed, and composed b H. Dudley, aged Dudley was his own engraver, compositor and pressman, and this little volume is a remarkable production for a mere Child. Even his press was made according to his own instructions, and he printed one page Only at a time. About 1836 a press was established by Mason co., at Arundel, and in that year they printed The Report Of 3 Savings'' Bank case.'' I can glean but little information regarding Midhurst, but James Chandler and Henry Goodner are given as printers in Kelly''s Directory for 1845; while in 1848 William Ranger had a press at Northiam, in east Sussex, and issued in that vear ''a Brief History and Descrip tion Of Bodiam Castle''
