The High Plains stretch from Texas in the south to the Canadian border in the north, embracing parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota and eastern Montana. Population density and land values are low, particularly in the north, and the agricultural economy is often precarious. Therefore, when things go wrong, farms, homesteads, grain elevators, schools and churches are just abandoned as they have little or no value. Tony and Eva Worobiec have been travelling to the States for 20 years and they never tire of investigating these strange and hauntingly beautiful places. Weathered and bleached under the unremitting cycle of hot summers and harsh winters, these iconic buildings stand isolated against the backcloth of the open plains. This collection of photographs captures the strange illusive beauty one often finds in decay. Largely undisturbed, the interiors also serve as time capsules of an historical period and culture, offering an emotive and evocative portrait of daily life in a challenging environment. Tony and Eva were concerned always to capture the real thing, recognizing that the gradual process of ageing produces its own unique testament to history.
