Description

Excerpt from Aesthetics: A Study of the Fine Arts in Theory and Practice

This work, then, is the result of the application to aes thetic theory and artistic practice of two realistically meta physical postulates: one, that there is a value in the world corresponding to what we experience as the feeling of the beautiful, responsible for the arousal of that feeling but at the same time ontologically independent of all such effects or interactions with human beings; two, that such independ ent aesthetic value is analyzable into relations of structure and function, so that for every value there is a relation, or structure or function, or a set of them, and conversely. The topic chosen could very well be described as the nature of art, with due regard for the many and varied meanings of ''nature''. The aim has been to emphasize the ontological lack of difference between art and other parts of nature. In this work - the chapters on psychological aspects included ontology is deemed to be central to all questions of aesthetics and art.
