Excerpt from A Philosophical System of Theistic Idealism
The history of this work is soon told. I had some growing desire, subsequent to the issue of my large work entitled ''recent Advances in Theistic Philosophy of Religion,'' to write in a specific way on Theistic Idealism. That was already made evident in my ''studies in European Philo sophy.'' But that desire was still too vague and formless when Dr Rashdall''s review of the latter work appeared in ''mind.'' It was to me a great encouragement to find so eminent a critic expressing the wish that I would under take a systematic exposition and defence of Theistic Idealism. For that suggestion I now offer Dr Rashdall my best thanks. Much of the credit of this work, whatever that may be, is due to the wish so definitely and kindly expressed, although the suggestion lay in my mind for a long time before it took actual root. Then, in a time of solitary re?ection, the whole subject was so forcefully borne in upon my mind, that I had no alternative than to set to work.
