Description
The story of a sixteen-and-a-half year old boy who joins the army in September 1914 and goes on to become an officer in the Lancashire Fusiliers in April 1915. In 1916 he is posted to the Somme and takes part in the attack on Thiepval on the immortalised 1st July. Later that year in October, he is wounded and returns to England to recover. In October 1917 he is sent out to the front, this time to Belgium and after enduring winter in the trenches his battalion move to Kemmel Hill to help with the defences. In the German attack on April 25th 1918 the hill is lost and in the evening of that day Lawrence is killed by shellfire. This is his story as compiled by his nephew, Terry Whippy.
