HE purpose of the author in writing this article was to furnish a book of instruction for those unacquainted with legal principles, rather than to furnish a legal guide for trained men. However, because of the care with which the subjects have been treated, it is hoped that the work will be found to appeal to the latter as well as the former class of readers. 11] The most important subjects of the common law, arranged with a view of their logical development, are discussed. By common law, is meant the customs of the people, recognized by the written or unwritten decisions of the courts, as distinguished from legis lative acts, known as statute or written law. (11 The author has discussed those statutes only which are quite universally recognized. Students of business administration require a knowledge of the principles of common law. They do not require a knowledge of the great mass of statutes, differing in the different States and subject to frequent change. Even attorneys do not attempt to keep posted on the statutes of different States, but examine them only as occasion requires. A few statutes, such as the United States Bankruptcy Act and others of similar impor.
