Description
In September 2004, I began looking for surviving veterans, and my initial encounter with Henry Allingham occurred just two months later. By September 2005, I had met my eighth veteran.
“I killed at least six German soldiers, we were set on by the German soldiers who appeared from nowhere with fixed bayonets and they came in single file, that was their mistake, because the machine gun will fire all the time as long us you keep pushing the trigger. One fell down and exposed another, they keep on falling down and each one received one of the many bullets that I was firing. You just pointed at the single file coming in front at your gun, you don’t need to aim at all, burrp, burrp, click, click, click hundreds of bullets all the time firing.”
This is just one of the many memories George Rice recalled to me while talking about his time as a Lewis gunner in the trenches.
Many of the veterans stories contained in this book are compelling and emotional whilst others show the humorous and compassionate personalities of the men as they opened up about their facilitating lives before, during and after the war to end all wars.
Some of the stories you may have read already, as they have been told many times before, while others you will be reading for the first time as the veterans opened up to me about their lives.
This book includes my personal interviews and my previously unseen photographs of the last few men to have witnessed the Great War who all gave me an understanding that no amount of reading books could have ever done.
