Springfield, the principles out of which the game of basket-ball was there evolved, he became the only man who has ever through deliberate ao tion added to our too short list of major sports. His New York Public Schools Athletic League, a pioneer institution, has grown and prospered. His Camp Fire Girls represent a long step toward the discovery of the girl. The Play ground and Recreation Association of America, of which he was a principal founder, has led in the development of play and recreation in this country. His teaching has, through the Y. M. C. A. And other organizations, been a great in?uence in the social and physical train ing of the American armies in the great war, and has profoundly in?uenced the morale of the men. His death resulted from personal devo tion to this object in Y. M. C. A. Work in France.
