Description
Excerpt from Management Succession in Small and Growing Enterprises
In contrast to this, succession is complicated for the small concern because most of its management resources are cen tered in one man; its Operating organization is typically thin and heavily dependent on the general manager for day - to-day guidance, and there is usually no effective source of outside help.
Though popular attention has recently been given to small business problems, it has mainly been directed toward such areas as taxation, share of defense production and controlled materials, relief from governmental restrictions, and protection from Big Business. The difficulty of providing for continu ity of management in the small company is a problem which has received scant recognition. Yet bank and trust officers interviewed in the course of this study estimated that from 70% to 90% of the small companies with which they Were familiar had failed to look ahead and prepare for the transition from current to next-generation management. The results of this study substantiate these estimates.
