Description

Over 125 full colour images capturing the wonderful variety of urban wall art that adorns the streets of cities, towns and villages across this Central American country.  The history of murals and wall art in Mexico can be traced back to the early 1920´s, when artists where commissioned by the government to create art that educated the citizens who were, by and large, illiterate. This artistic movement depicted the Mexican Revolution, the country’s history and a positive vision of the future for the growing masses.

This public artwork also often featured the working classes, Mexican pre-colonial events and indigenous people... as a way to inspire national pride and teach the population a version of history that uplifted their spirits.  The movement sparked a significant amount of public art in the cities, towns and villages throughout Mexico and also filtered over the border to the USA.

Today, modern wall artists are continuing this tradition across the country, with a vast array of painting styles and wonderfully diverse subject matter adorning buildings, houses, doors, walls and gates for the local people and tourists to enjoy and savour.
