Description

Excerpt from History of the Rise and Progress of the Arts of Design in the United States, Vol. 2

John Roberts, the universal genius, a notice of whom I have given, at this time attracted attention. Doctor Ander son, (for his medical title sticks to him to this hour,) after trying various experiments, and making himself somewhat proficient in the art, gained an introduction to Roberts, and was received by him as a pupil. He worked as long as he could with Roberts, for the purpose of improving himself in drawing, and working with the graver, but the irregularity of the eccentric Scotchman, and his intemperance, forced him to give up the advantages he might have derived from his ih struction.
