Description
Excerpt from The English Fireplace: A History of the Development of the Chimney, Chimney-Piece and Firegrate With Their Accessories, From the Earliest Times to the Beginning of the Xixth Century
Ome years ago my friend Mr. W. Galsworthy Davie, Whose photographs of architectural work are known to many, turned his attention to photographing the fine examples of old chimney-pieces which he met with in his various photographic tours, and asked me to co-operate with him in the production of a book on the subject of the Fireplace and its accessories. I accepted the task light-heartedly, thinking that some thirty years'' associa tion with grates and chimney-pieces would have made it an easy one for me, but in this I was mistaken, as I soon found that the subject required much personal research and a further study of old examples, as well as the making of numerous sketches and mea sured drawings for the elucidation of its history. It became necessary also to get Mr. Davie to photograph many important examples in historic houses, and so, by filling in the gaps, produce a representative collection.
